i posted this on my facebook page and everyone commented and said i was a racist.  oh right, i forgot that in this country were not allowed to bring up the subject of race in a conversation without being called a racist.  never mind that my closest friend is black.  sorry for being sexually attracted to white guys.

Um.  Girl, you are racist.

Actually no, it’s called preference. Being attracted to white men is no more racist than being attracted to anyone else

Actually, yes.  The idea that our attractions are not shaped by a society that has an inherently places Western, “White” features above features that are often associated with people of color (for example fuller lips, “kinkier hair”) is extremely laughable.  People can have their “preferences” all they want (do not give a fuck, would not want to date or fuck them anyway) but it does not change the fact that writing off entire groups of people of color as “unattractive” is, in fact, racist.

Racism: A Primer~*

Racism is sociologically defined (and therefore not going to be used in the DICTIONARY) as policies and practices put into place to enforce hierarchies. These hierarchies are also known as ways to keep white people in power.

In short, racism = prejudice + power. Power being the way that white people exert their power just by having white skin. Although race is a biological concept and therefore it has no place in being used in conversations tied to one’s worth, it is still used as a tool to support racism.

Being the good citizen that I am I have uploaded some amazing articles written by mostly men (so hopefully you will take them more to heart but some of these men aren’t white so idk) who have degrees and shit in sociology and this is taken as fact and this is their life’s work. They have been published in journals! Read them.

The only reason I am doing this is because I can’t just keep trying to explain this to people and I think it’s a damn fucking shame that people do not want to learn about this. Additionally, I have the privilege of taking a solid class on this but I did learn from the internet. There is some privilege in learning but in no way should I have to put up with racist and sexist remarks everyday (online or off) and be okay with it.

To be honest, I dislike how often discussions of racism get derailed to explain to people that the dictionary definition is out-of-date and inadequate but I feel it is a conversation we need to have.  Racism will always be more complex than a “hatred or intolerance of another race or other races”.  It is a set of practices and subconscious behaviors that continuously teaches us to default to white, where “nude” is considered to be beige, and black folks and Hispanics have higher incarceration rates than whites for the similar crimes.  By saying this I am not undermining bullying you may have received in grade, middle or high school and I am also not saying people of color cannot be prejudiced against other races themselves.  All I am saying is we, as people of color, cannot be racist since we lack the power to full on oppress you.  It is truly that simple to grasp.
